▶ 장소 : X514 Immersive Hall
▶ 강사 : Dr. Harin Lee (University of Cambridge)
▶ 강사 소개 :
Dr. Harin Lee earned his PhD in Cognitive Science at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, with a multidisciplinary background in sound engineering (BMus) and psychology and data sciences (MSc). He has recently been elected as Junior Research Fellow at University of Cambridge where he will conduct independent project on mapping the rhythmic atlas of the world. Harin won several awards across diverse disciplines including cultural evolution (CES), music perception and cognition (ICMPC), and computational humanities (CHR) communities. He is also the co-founder of “aiar”, an art-science collective that uses live brain imaging techniques to bring innovative approaches to music and visual art performances.
▶ 강의 내용 :
What makes a beautiful melody? Why do certain colours look good together? Are we, as humans, born to like certain patterns, or do we learn these preferences from our cultural environments? In this talk, I will share my research exploring how cultural taste develops, using two distinct approaches. First, I analyse large amounts of real-world data, including the music listening habits of millions of users. I relate these musical patterns to factors such as age, location, and social connections to understand how demographics shape an individual’s music choices. Second, I travel deep into the Amazon rainforest to work with indigenous communities who have very limited exposures to the global media. Together, these insights reveal the rich diversity of cultural preferences around the globe, at the same time, what we might all universally share as humans.
