Abstract : The Academy for Theatre and Digitality in Dortmund (Germany) is a pioneering research hub exploring artistic innovation in the field of performing arts through emerging digital technologies. Two recent projects illustrate this vision: Common Grounds by Kerstin Ergenzinger and Bnaya Halperin-Kaddari, which sonifies climate data to create new somatic experiences, and [Who] rules to encounter by Silke Grabinger, merging AI, choreography, and humanoid robotics.

The Academy for Theatre and Digitality : The Academy for Theatre and Digitality was established in 2019 as the sixth division of Theater Dortmund in Germany. At the heart of its activities lies an exploration of how digital technologies can be utilized within theatrical spaces. The Academy’s work focuses on four core areas: artistic research and development, professional and further education, cultural policy consulting, and national and international collaboration.

Six years after its founding, the Academy has become a global hub connecting cultural institutions, festivals, and independent practitioners. Serving as a key networking platform and a center for innovation in the cultural sector’s digital transformation, the Academy participates in major European and international projects such as PlayOn!, ACuTe, and EXCENTRIC.

The Academy houses a variety of facilities including research labs, workshops, audio/video studios, and a green screen studio equipped with a motion capture system, spanning a total area of approximately 2,000 square meters. Here, theatre creators and creative technologists from around the world develop and experiment with research projects that utilize digital tools. The works produced at the Academy are presented on stages worldwide, setting new standards in the field of digital performing arts.

BIO 1 - Michael Eickhoff

Michael Eickhoff studied history, literature, and sociology in Germany and France. He curated numerous productions and international guest performances at Schauspiel Dortmund. Since 2020, he has been responsible for fostering international networks across art, science, and business at the Academy for Theatre and Digitality.BIO 2 - Carla Meller

After ten years of experience at the Residenztheater, Carla Meller joined the Academy for Theatre and Digitality in 2023. She leads the expansion of international partnerships and innovative projects, bringing her expertise in cultural management and arts administration to the institution.
