[아트&테크놀로지] Imagination Seminar - Lines that Bind: Art, Research, Life(11/19)

작성자: 발전홍보팀

▶ Date : November 19th (Wed.) 1:30 PM

▶ Venue: X514 Immersive Hall
▶ Speaker : Prof. Yuichiro Katsumoto (Tokyo Denki Univ. Japan)

▶ Abstract :
In this talk, I will reflect on the past ten years of my practice, focusing especially on works presented at ACM SIGGRAPH. At the center is the theme of the line. For centuries, humanity has used writing and drawing to compress the three-dimensional world into two-dimensional traces. My work seeks to reverse this process, releasing the line from the surface back into physical space. The result is moving typography and kinetic graphics that are beautiful and rich, yet at times excessive, strange, or seemingly unnecessary. And it is precisely in that sense of “unnecessary” that imagination and playfulness are awakened. I will also share the work through which I first met Prof. Choi, as well as experiences from my time as a colleague at the National University of Singapore (NUS). These moments marked important nodes along the larger line of my life, shaping both my research and creative practice. Art, research, and life—these are the lines that bind together, sometimes twisting, sometimes stretching in unexpected directions. Their trajectories have been the driving force behind my practice.

▶ Short Bio :
Yuichiro Katsumoto is an award-winning artist and educator based in Saitama, Japan. His work explores the interplay of letters and images through experiments with strings, ribbons, and springs, transforming lines from flat surfaces into kinetic typography and motion graphics. He earned his Ph.D. in video production, physical computing, and design thinking from Keio University in 2010, later working at the National University of Singapore before joining Tokyo Denki University, where he leads The Utsuroi Lab. Recognized with honors such as the Japan Media Arts Festival Excellence Prize and the A’ Design Award Platinum, Katsumoto also chaired the ACM SIGGRAPH Asia Art Papers in 2024 and continues to serve as an advisor to the program.
