[철학연구소] 해외석학 초청 강연회(3/30)

2026년 3월 서강대 철학연구소에서는 James Dominic Rooney, OP 신부님을 모시고자 합니다.

James Dominic Rooney, OP 신부님은 Hong Kong Baptist 대학의 철학과 조교수로 학생들을 가르치고 계십니다. 신부님의 주된 관심사는 중세 형이상학, 중세철학, 그리고 중국철학 그 중에서도 정주이학(程朱理学)입니다. 이번 발표는 이러한 신부님의 연구 분야와 관심사가 포괄적으로 잘 드러난 주제라 볼 수 있습니다. 신부님께서는 중세철학자인 토마스 아퀴나스가 제시한 신 존재 증명과 중국 송대의 대표적인 철학자인 주희의 신 존재 증명을 비교 연구한 결과를 발표할 예정입니다. 중세철학 또는 중국철학 그리고 비교철학에 관심 있으신 분들의 많은 참여 부탁드립니다. 루니 신부님이 제공하신 이번 발표의 요약문은 다음과 같습니다.

1. Thomas Aquinas and the Existence of God

I will lay out the basic metaphysical framework employed by the medieval thinker Thomas Aquinas (1225-1275) and introduce the general way in which Aquinas conceives of proofs for the existence of God. Then, I will focus on and defend two such proofs, the cosmological proof and the teleological proof. I will relate these discussions to contemporary metaphysics and secondary literature.

2. Zhu Xi and the Existence of God

Several contemporary interpreters allege that there is no good possibility of reconciling theism with traditional Confucianism. I will respond to one objection which alleges that Christian and Confucian perspectives on the God-world relation are irreconcilable, usually by appeal to purported facts that God is 'transcendent' whereas Confucian Tian 天 is 'immanent.' I will show that, once clarified, this objection is seriously defective. Indeed, one can find Neo-Confucian authors who embrace strikingly similar claims to those made by exemplar theists such as Thomas Aquinas. I will highlight Zhu Xi 朱熹 (1130-1200 AD) as one such example."
